Learn more about the community you live in as we continue our exploration of Northwest Indiana this week at Hilltop Neighborhood House. Hilltop is an essential part of the community they serve, providing not only childcare for children 6 weeks to five years old, but also a kindergarten readiness program, a food pantry, and a community garden. At Hilltop, children can grow and learn in a safe environment fostering important social and academic skills.

One of Hilltop’s goals is to instill a love of learning into its children, which they are able to achieve with the help of their amazing staff. According to their website, 85% of their teaching staff have over 20 years of teaching experience with a licensed lead teacher in each classroom.

They also have a community garden where their children can learn how to grow food on their own. Some of the produce they grow also goes to benefit their food pantry.

“We are servicing up to 70 individuals or families each week.” Said Cindy Tougaw, a volunteer at the Hilltop Food Pantry. “Each week clients receive two cold bags which consist of cold cuts, milk, butter, cheese, eggs and a couple dry bags with all various canned goods and cereal and everything you need for a week.”

The food pantry is open Monday from 3:00 to 5:00 pm and Thursday 9:00 – 11:30 am. With the help of volunteers, local organizations, and community donations, Hilltop is able to help feed our community.

But Hilltop doesn’t stop there. “We also do a mobile food pantry where we take out food to people that can’t get to our pantry in different residential areas, apartment complexes in Valpo.” The Director of Development Michelle Michaels explained. Hilltop goes above and beyond to make sure everyone has an opportunity to get help from their food pantry.

If you would like to donate to Hilltop or their food pantry, check out their website to find a list of their current needs, or Michelle said in her interview, “Our Food pantry always takes donations. We always need especially canned meats like spam, cereal. We also need essentials for people, diapers, paper towels, things like that.”

“It’s Not About The House, It’s About The People.”

Meet Bridget and Cathy, owners of Art Z & Co. in Valparaiso. Art Z & Co. is a gallery of fine arts crafted by local Northwest Indiana artists. This treasure trove of fun finds is filled to the brim with varying pieces of art, boutique gifts, modern vintage items, and much more. They also offer several classes where people can come and learn how to create some of their own masterpieces.

“I’ve met so many creative people. I never imagined how many people are out there that … their art is so different and fresh and new, and new ideas it’s been great,” said Bridget in her interview with Lynda Anderson, owner of Boulder Bay Realty Group, and founder of the Lynda Anderson Team. Both Bridget and Cathy agree that it’s the people that they most enjoy about Art Z and Co. “I enjoy the People. I’m not going to lie. I love the wonderful people we’ve met along our way,” said Cathy.

Cathy and Bridget have been in business for over three years. They met by happenstance. Cathy explained that she met Bridget through her co-partner at the time Kay Cherepko. Bridget was a friend of Kay’s and Kay knew Bridget was interested in art and opening a business, so she showed her a space in their building. “So, I called her on the phone and I thought we would … team up and open the space as Art Z Fine Art Z and Antiquez,” said Cathy.

And so, Art Z was born, and as they continued to prosper, they “grew out of that space” in Chesterton as Cathy explained, and found their home in Valparaiso.

Today, Art Z & Co. is home to many different brilliant and talented artists. “…We have over 35 local artists from Northwest Indiana featured in our store,” said Bridget “We have artists that have won national awards. We have artists that have had their art in shows in Las Vegas. We have a licensed artist, so you can buy her puzzles right now, her name is Peggy Davis, at Kohls. We have a lot of talented northwest Indiana people involved in our gallery and in our shops.”

But they are not just a gallery, they also have four boutiques within their shop which offer a wide variety of items at reasonable prices. These boutiques include, Flying Mermaids, Flashbacks, Jazzy Jems, and 112th Avenue Creations. “There is a lot to choose from for great gifts,” said Cathy.

They also provide several different classes where you can learn how to create your own piece of art. They are also willing to work with you to help create an event of your choosing. “Just give us a call and we’ll do what we can to get artists to participate and have some fun,” said Bridget.
